A day in the life of... Danny Scoltock, Head of Underwriting
Danny Scoltock is head of underwriting for TAB and has over ten years of specialist finance experience. For the next day in the life series, he gives us an inside look into his daily routine as an underwriter.
Danny’s day starts with a cup of coffee and feeding the cats at 7.30am. As he remains working from home his commute to the office is one flight of stairs.
His role at TAB is making sure that the loans TAB lends against are fully reviewed, and that TAB is making the right lending decisions and the first thing on his agenda is a call with the rest of the team to determine everyone's priorities for the day. Using his emails as his to do list, he can see what the urgent tasks are and any new applications that need reviewing. He’s able to manage any case replies and see what stage of the underwriting process other cases are at.
As he’s managing a team remotely, he leaves this Google Meets call open all day. This allows for any team member to jump in and out as they need should they have any questions.
When he’s not underwriting cases - which involves checking the story and understanding the entire picture of the loan from the borrower, to the property to the exit - he’s continuously looking at the lending process, ensuring that TAB is operating the smoothest possible process for all parties and working with the in house tech team to develop an innovative borrower platform.
Underwriting is a detailed and vital role in the placement of risks for TAB’s lending process. It’s a role that requires attention to detail, organisation and the ability to think outside the box, so in the evenings Danny likes to switch off. He is typically spending time with his partner, watching a TV drama or a Netflix series. Although when she puts on Coronation Street, you’ll find him at the computer playing games and chatting with friends. As a self confessed night owl he’s going to bed between 11 to 12pm.
How long have you worked at TAB?
I have been at TAB for over two years. I started as a BDM but later transferred into underwriting as a position opened up which suited me better. I have worked previously as an underwriter and a BDM which helps ensure I understand the process from both sides of the loan and is part of the reason why our sales team and underwriting work in parallel to one another.
What does your role at TAB involve?
Outside of the usual underwriting responsibilities I manage the underwriting team and most importantly make sure we all share the same values. This means being responsive, efficient and most of all, honest with all our brokers and clients. I put service at the forefront of what we do as this can really set you apart from the competition. Brokers in our industry are professionals and they know how each lender works and their strengths and weaknesses. A reliable, honest lender who delivers what is promised can make a real difference to both their experience and their client’s.
What’s the best thing about working at TAB?
The best part of working at TAB is the team. We are a young company right now but the quality of people that fill each role is unlike anything I have seen before. We are all jointly invested in the values and goals while motivated to create something that we can all be proud of. Getting everyone on that same page can be a real challenge but the more people that join us see this too and end up jumping right on board with the company ethos! - It's truly impressive.
How do you relax outside the office?
Outside the office, I like to go to the gym, enjoy catching up with friends for a beer or two. I enjoy travelling and going on holiday to new places or just trying to get outside my comfort zone and try something new like when I went to the Glastonbury festival.
What does the future hold for TAB?
I think the future of TAB will be an exciting one. We have the launch of TAB Property which is really exciting and innovative and I am really looking forward to seeing that grow and develop.
I have no doubt at all that we will continue to grow on our lending side of the business. We are aiming to adopt technology as much as possible and become real leaders in this regard. We want to create technologies that can improve the entire lifecycle of a loan for our brokers, clients and underwriters while still allowing flexibility along the way. I am really excited to be a part of this and see it develop in the near future.
